Super Set Singles Results

The Stratford Tennis Club held its annual Super Set Singles tournament this past weekend. 26 players in the men’s and ladies events played through the rain and drizzle. The weather did not dampen the calibre of play or the enjoyment of the spectators.

The Men’s ‘A’ event saw long time club star Bob Tamblyn advance to the final 4 along with 3 teenagers. In the first semifinal Tamblyn faced Ryan Lay. Lay started out playing great, going toe to toe with Tamblyn. With a 4-3 lead Tamblyn took charge, running off 4 straight games to advance to the final with an 8-3 victory. The other semifinal was the match of the day. Brothers John and Luke Fischer battled it out for the second spot in the final. The high calibre match was a thrill to watch and featured ebbs and flows in momentum. After falling behind 6-4 younger brother Luke found another gear and posted a 8-6 win for a place in the championship match. The final showed why Tamblyn has been a top player in the club for over 25 years. Every shot Fischer threw at him Tamblyn had an answer. Nullifying Fischer’s power, chasing down attempted drop shots, serving big in the important moments Tamblyn put on a clinic. Tamblyn took the title with a very impressive 8-0 win.

The Men’s ‘A’ consolation final saw Steven Schwartzentruber take out talented lefty Marcel Lundrigan 8-2 to claim the title. The Men’s ‘B’ title went to Jim Wilson who outlasted Craig Cambell 8-6 in the best final of the day. Graham Heaton took the Men’s ‘B’ consolation title with an 8-5 win over Marcus Nicholson in the final.

The Ladies ‘A’ event saw Marta Andrekovic and Maria Donkers  face off for the championship. Andrekovic advanced to the final after edging Sandie Ennett in the semifinal, nipping Ennett in a tie-breaker. Donkers scored an impressive upset in her semifinal taking out second seed Nicolle Crowley. The final was a well played battle. Each player impressed with their shot making. Eventually Andrekovic pulled away and took the championship with an 8-5 victory.

The Ladies ‘A’ consolation final saw the losing semifinalists do battle. Crowley was able to find her form and took down Ennett 8-3 to claim the title. The Ladies ‘B’ champion is Erma Weernink as she scored an 8-3 win over Jolanda VenDerEijk in the final.
